Email isn't dead. You killed it.
Every so often somebody announces that email marketing is dead. And every so often, the businesses using it well keep pulling some of the best returns of their entire marketing spend out of it. So who is right? Both, in their own way. Email as a channel is more alive than ever: it is direct, it is yours, you do not depend on anyone's algorithm. What did die is the way most people use it: buying lists, sending the same email to everyone, filling inboxes with promotions nobody asked for. If your email is not working, the channel has not run out. It is how you are using it. And that is fixable.

Why your email stopped working
It is almost always the same reasons. You write to a bought or stale list that neither knows you nor asked for anything. You send the same message to everyone, regardless of who they are. You talk only about yourself — "we've got the best deal" — instead of talking to the person. And on top of that you do it too often. The result: people do not open, they mark you as spam, and your sender reputation sinks. The channel is fine; the method is what's broken.
1. Build your list, never buy it
A bought list is money thrown away and a risk to your reputation. Those people do not know you, do not want you, and will mark you as spam within seconds. A list you build yourself — people who left their email because something of yours interested them — is worth a thousand times more, even if it is smaller. A thousand subscribers who opened the door to you outperform fifty thousand who have no idea who you are. Offer something of value in exchange for the email and let people come in of their own accord.
2. Segment: don't speak to everyone the same way
Your list is not one uniform mass. There is the person who just subscribed, the one who has bought three times, the one who opened your last emails and the one who has not opened anything in months. Sending them all the same message is like shouting one thing at a whole room. When you segment — by behaviour, by interest, by stage — each group gets something that actually applies to them, and that is when opens and clicks go up. Segmentation is the least glamorous job in email and the one that delivers most.
3. Automate the moments that matter
You do not have to write every email by hand. There are key moments you can automate once and leave running: the welcome for a new subscriber, the reminder for an abandoned cart, the follow-up after a purchase, the reactivation of someone who went cold. These automated emails, built properly, tend to be the best performing of your whole operation, because they arrive exactly when the person is thinking about you. Set them up once and they work on their own.
4. Write for a person, not for a list
The best email feels like a message from somebody who knows you, not like a brochure. Use a subject line that creates genuine curiosity, write the way you would speak to a client face to face, and get to the point. People do not read brand emails, they read emails that interest them. A personal touch — the name, a reference to something they did, a human tone — completely changes the response rate. Less "dear customer", more conversation.
5. Guard your sender reputation like you guard your brand
A well-written email is worthless if it lands in spam. Your sender reputation depends on technical things many people ignore: authenticating your domain, pruning subscribers who never open, not blasting the whole list at once, and respecting anyone who wants to leave. A clean, engaged list speaks better to mailbox providers than a huge dead one. Keeping your database hygienic is not optional, it is what gets you into the inbox rather than the bin.
So do I revive it or bury it?
You revive it. Email is still one of the highest-return channels there is, with an advantage no social network gives you: the list is yours, no algorithm can take it away or change the rules overnight. What you have to bury is the old method: bought lists, unsegmented blasts, talking only about yourself. Build your base, segment it, automate what matters and write like a human. At Talent Warehouse we build email and CRM flows that bring that channel back and make it, once again, one of the most profitable things your brand can do.
